Tony Zawinul is the eldest son of the late, legendary Jazz Pianist, Joe Zawinul and Executor of the Zawinul Estate, Tony Zawinul is a multi-media artist,musician, film director, and former outstanding athlete who held the California Long Jump and Hurdle title en route to the 1980 Olympic trials. As a filmmaker, he has worked with several prominent jazz groups, including the “Yellowjackets”. Tony has been involved closely with his father’s music, directing the documentary “Two Years with the Zawinul Syndicate”, and presently completing the upcoming documentary film “Joe Zawinul: An American Dream.” In addition, he is in pre-production for “The Calm Before The Storm,” the definitive Weather Report documentary on the legendary jazz group that garnered a massive following in the 70′s and 80′s. Their status was fueled by their platinum selling “Heavy Weather” featuring the jazz standard “Birdland” with members Joe Zawinul, saxophonist – Wayne Shorter, bassist – Jaco Pastorius and other jazz greats of the time. The film project ran a successful crowd funding campaign on indiegogo, reaching it’s goal in thirty days.
