Tim Campanella is a drummer / composer originally from the south of France (close to Nice), and established during those last years in Amsterdam, New York and now Paris.
Even though his roots comes from Jazz, his first love, his playing and music contains a lot of influences from Soul, Hip/Hop, Gospel and other modern genres of music, in order to explore new sounds.
In those last years, he played in various bands and projects with: Gilad Hekselman, Franck McComb, Shai Maestro, David Berkman, Matthias Löscher, John Ellis, Ayanna Witter–Johnson, John Raymond Project, Shauli Einav, Gerry Lopez, Freddy, Quinze, Arctica, among others.
In may 2013, he released “Mixtape of Impromptu”, his first album as a leader recorded in New York, and featuring Shai Maestro, Gilad Hekselman, John Ellis and Chris Smith.
Tim started to play drums at the age of 3, jamming on Phil Collins songs with a plastic drumset, and started to take lessons at the age of 7 with Christophe Perez, a renowned teacher in the south of France. His first musical experience in a group situation was at church, where he started playing every sunday since the age of 11, before being part some years later of the CIV Big Band directed by Jean- François Jacomino. He started then to study Jazz with Jean-Paul Ceccarelli at the conservatory of Nice, while playing regularly in the local scene. While he was 17 years old, he got invited to play with legendary bassist and producer Marcus Miller, at the after festival of Jazz à Juan and in Monaco, a meeting that impacted him and encouraged him to pursue his dream of being a professional musician.
He graduated from the Conservatorium Van Amsterdam with a Bachelor Degree in Jazz Drums, and received in 2010 a Fulbright Scholarship to study at Queens College of New York and do a master degree in Jazz Drums. His last teachers were John Riley, Gene Jackson, Nasheet Waits, Martijn Vink and Eric Harland among others.
